As part of Mazatlan’s commitment to emphasizing a modernized look and feel, combined with a delicate blend of old world charm, Mazatlan’s most popular beach, Olas Altas, is celebrating a refreshing new look.

“We appreciate our travelers from afar, looking for a sparkling and stylish destination, mixed with the preserved charm of centuries of history,” said Marco Antonio Garcia Castro, secretary of tourism, Mazatlan Tourism Board. “It is an honor to deliver both comfort and a contemporary feeling at Olas Altas, while retaining much of the character from the 1940s, 50s, and 60s.”

The city made infrastructure improvements to the famed Malecon, home to one of the world’s most spectacular sunsets. The enhancements span most of the four-mile-long oceanfront promenade and include new sidewalks and light fixtures that provide among other things, a romantic setting for a moonlit stroll.

Active enthusiasts, like cyclists, are enjoying the new bike pathway and the streamlined access it provides.

While the improvements can be immediately noticed by the new or returning visitor, landmarks from those golden days remain, including “El Venadito,” a symbol of the etymological origin of the name of the city in the statue of a deer. Another distinctive landmark, the Carpa Olivera, is the oldest natural pool in Mexico was refreshed just two years ago.

Silvia Ruiz Coppel, undersecretary of tourism, hailed the newly manicured cobblestone streets, world-class restaurants and highly sought-out boutique hotels along Olas Altas while revering the nostalgia that the area retains.

“We cherish that some of the most famous people in the U.S. and Mexican political and cultural history continue to choose Mazatlan and Olas Altas as their hideaway,” said Ruiz Coppel. “From past Mexican presidents and some of the most celebrated names in Hollywood such as Errol Flynn, Clark Gable, John Wayne and Robert Mitchum to modern-day movie stars, Mazatlan will always be a quick getaway that’s not too far from home but a world away from the everyday grind.”

Many in the tourism industry will experience this renaissance at Tianguis Turistico, a global tourism event where Mexico hosts hoteliers, travel agents, tour operators, OTA’s, meeting planners, airline executives and travel media from more than 80 countries. Tianguis Turistico Mexico 2018 will be held at the International Convention Center from April 16-19, 2018.
