UK visitors drive tourism in Jordan

Jordan saw further growth in UK visitor numbers in 2017, with numbers increasing by six per cent, compared to the same period in 2016.

The rise in travellers follows the launch of Jordan’s adventure offering through the introduction of the Jordan Trail and the resurgence of consumer confidence in the country.

Not only are visitor numbers up year on year, but 2017 British arrivals surpassed those recorded in 2010, known as the ‘golden year’ for Jordan tourism, with numbers up 30 per cent compared to 2010.

This archaeological city of Petra also welcomed 44.4 per cent more visitors between January to November 2017, totalling 468,615 visitors, compared to the same period in 2016.

Despite this surge in visitors the vast site, covering 264,000 square meters, Petra still offers plenty of space for tourists to wander freely with the rose city welcoming 21.4 per cent of overall capacity in 2017 (total yearly visitor capacity is up to 2,190,000).

Abed Al Razzaq Arabiyat, managing director of Jordan Tourism Board, commented: “We are thrilled to have welcomed more British tourists last year, to explore our rich history, culture and adventure experiences.

“It is the first time since 2010 that we have seen visitor numbers exceed our best recorded year for UK arrivals, and we look to build on the positive steps made in 2017 with many exciting launches across the Hashemite Kingdom in 2018.”
