Travel Alberta understands that global access to Alberta from its nine global markets represents some of the greatest potential for tourism growth in the province. Critical to this growth is the development and support of direct, non-stop air access into Edmonton and Calgary.
That’s why we are celebrating two new non-stop flights from Mexico and the U.S., two markets in which we have invested significant marketing efforts.
The increase and convenience of international direct flights is now taking off at the Calgary International Airport. On March 8, it has now become easier for international travelers coming into Alberta from Denver and on March 14 New Mexico, to travel to the Alberta on a non-stop aircraft. The direct non-stop access and fluent air connectivity will impact the volume and number of international travellers arriving to Calgary, and in effect support the 2022 tourism growth strategy in Alberta.
WestJet’s new service to Denver Colorado is expected to be scheduled and operate daily year-round. Canada has very strong links to Colorado, and Calgary very strong links to Denver – both from a commercial and a tourism perspective. Alberta ranks as the second-largest Canadian province with regards to visitors from Colorado.
“Growing our non-stop destinations across the U.S. and internationally is an important part of ensuring that our tourism and business sectors in Calgary can continue to flourish,” said Bob Sartor, President and CEO of The Calgary Airport Authority.
WestJet begins service with four weekly flights between Calgary and Mexico City, and effective April 29 a daily service will then be offered.
WestJet’s non-stop service from Calgary to Mexico City is great news for Alberta and Mexico,” said Ricardo Miranda, Alberta’s Minister of Culture and Tourism. “The new service will support the growth of tourism, trade and investment, while strengthening the cultural ties and relationships between our two jurisdictions. The service further establishes Alberta as a world-class tourism destination and an important business centre, by enabling visitors from Mexico to travel directly to Calgary and our province, and providing Albertans with a gateway into the central and south American markets.”
