The weather has been kind to Vermont’s ski resorts and trails over the final weeks of 2017, dropping close to three feet of snow at skiing and snowboarding destinations. The heavy snowfall, combined with an ongoing stretch of cold weather, ensures that conditions for skiing, riding, snowmobiling and other winter sports will be excellent as we enter the new year.

Jan. 1, Multiple Vermont State Parks
Start the new year on the right foot with a hike in a Vermont State Park. On January 1, everyone is invited to join a free, guided, family-friendly hike taking place at many state parks and forests across Vermont. Hikes will be led by professional guides and outdoor educators eager to share their knowledge and love of Vermont’s outdoors.

Jan. 10, Trinity Episcopal Church of Rutland, Rutland
Pianist Michael Arnowitt performs and discusses the iconic and distinctly American music of Aaron Copland—including music from Four Piano Blues, Piano Variations, El Salon Mexico, Conversation at the Soda Fountain, his famous Appalachian Spring, and music he wrote for the film version of Thornton Wilder’s Our Town. This event is part of the Vermont Humanities Council’s First Wednesdays series.

Jan. 13-15, Billings Farm & Museum, Woodstock

Jan. 13, Barre Opera House, Barre
Vermont-based musician Neko Case is well known in the U.S. and Canada for her work with the New Pornographers band, as well as her solo career. This Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter’s music spans indie rock, alt country, and folk rock, and seven studio albums. Opening for Neko Case is the up-and-coming band Mt. Joy.

Jan. 13, Vermont Jazz Center, Brattleboro
Jazz trombonist Wycliff Gordon’s latest album is a tribute to Louis Armstrong. He recently completed a week at the Blue Note with David Sanborn, and a tour to celebrate the centennial anniversaries of Ella, Monk, Mongo and Dizzy. He has recorded 20 albums as leader and appears on over 300 recordings, with Wynton Marsalis, Natalie Merchant, Paul Simon, and many others.

Jan. 14, Mount Snow, West Dover
Join Mount Snow Ski & Snowboard School instructors as they descend the Canyon ski trail in a beautiful torchlight glow. Immediately following they’ll light up the sky with a huge fireworks display. The best place to watch the instructors descend Canyon trail is between the Clocktower and the Cape House.

Jan. 19, Fuller Hall, St. Johnsbury Academy, St. Johnsbury
This talented New York-based ensemble brings to life music first made famous decades ago. Brassy horn arrangements, rollicking piano melodies, and stellar vocals transport listeners to a different era. During the last two years, the Hot Sardines have been featured at the Newport Jazz Festival and the Montreal Jazz Festival and have sold out more than 150 performance dates from Chicago to London.

This concert, a tribute to Louis Moyse, features Grammy-nominated flutist Karen Kevra and pianist Jeffrey Chappell performing Michel Blavet’s Sonata ”L’Henriette”, Poulenc’s Sonata for flute and piano, and a short work of Louis Moyse. The second half of the program will feature works from Moyse’s collection “Flute Music by French Composers.”

Jan. 27, Spruce Peak Performing Arts Center, Stowe
The State Ballet Theatre of Russia returns to Stowe to perform Tchaikovsky’s Sleeping Beauty, the timeless fairy tale of a princess cursed to sleep for 100 years but awakened with a kiss. The traditional Petipa choreography is brought to life by the company’s 50 dancers in a celebration of true love and artistry.
