In celebration of our nation’s 150th birthday in 2017, the Government of Canada is supporting 150 community greening initiatives across the country.
Tree Canada announced an exciting new initiative called Tree to Our Nature, which allows municipalities, community organizations, groups, schools and other associations apply to have a planting event held in their area.
“Trees are a symbol of growth, strength, sustainability, hope and peace, said Michael Rosen, President of Tree Canada. “This is the perfect way to recognize the importance of trees and the environment to Canada’s legacy.”
Each of the 150 selected plantings will honour Canada’s legacy by planting at least one native maple tree, a First Nation’s symbolic tree and the appropriate provincial or territorial emblem tree. British Columbia’s official tree is the Western red cedar.
“The environment is one of the major themes at the heart of the celebrations for the 150th anniversary of the Confederation,” explained the Minister of Canadian Heritage, Mélanie Joly. “Communities across the country will come together to carry out 150 community greening projects that include planting trees and revitalizing green spaces.”
The deadline for submissions is February 17th, 2017 and you can find out more information on how to apply by visiting Tree Canada’s website.
