The BC Hospitality Foundation is matching funds raised via Dustin Klassen’s GoFundMe page, 50 cents on the dollar, up to $10,000, for a maximum additional support of $5,000.
Kayla Klassen, Dustin’s wife of 11 years, and mother to their two young children, has worked in the hospitality industry for the past 17 years, most recently at Bliss Bakery in Peachland. Her husband was diagnosed with a rare form of bone cancer in March 2016. Treatment for his particular cancer is not able to be performed by conventional means, so the family is actively seeking alternative therapies. Since their limited income is focused on medicine and treatment, all funds raised will go directly to covering the costs of food, rent, and a travel fund to support a possible cure.
Kayla applied to the Foundation after hearing about the charity’s support for another Okanagan worker, Meg Hanover.
Speaking to the Foundation, Dustin said, “When we heard that we were eligible for support, we were ecstatic. I can’t believe that the BCHF is going out of its way to help us out. Now I can pay for my medicine and get through the next couple of months without as much worry.”
Support from his community has so far been generous, but the family’s fundraising goals have not been met. Along with the GoFundMe page, tickets are available now for the “Rock the Night” fundraiser for Dustin, taking place on New Year’s Eve, Saturday, December 31, from 6:30pm to 1:00am at the Days Inn & Conference Centre (152 Riverside Drive, Penticton). For just $50 per person, the evening will include a dinner from Black Iron Grill, a silent auction, raffles, a 50/50 draw, door prizes and more. Music & comedy entertainment will round out this amazing evening for a great cause. Get your tickets at the door, or in advance at the Beach Avenue Hair Studio (5878 Beach Avenue, Peachland)
