The City of Kelowna bid to host the 55+ BC Games in 2019 has been approved.
The 55+ BC Games (formerly the BC Seniors Games) is an annual, multi-sport event hosted by a different B.C. community each year.
The event is expected to bring in an estimated $2 million in economic activity to the city, drawing approximately 3,800 athletes who will participate in over 25 sports.Approximately 100 athletes from Kelowna participate annually in the Games.
“Kelowna has an excellent resume of hosting exceptional multi-sport games and other high profile events,” said Mayor Colin Basran, “The 55+ BC Games in 2019 will be no exception. Our community showcases healthy living and competitive sport in a stunning four-season playground—we are, Active by Nature—and we look forward to hosting a most successful 55+ BC Games in 2019.”
It was also announced this weekend that Vernon will host the event in 2017, and Cranbrook in 2018.
“On behalf of our society and the 55+ BC Games, we would like to thank and congratulate the three winning bid communities,” said Wayne Naka, president of the BC Seniors Games Society.
“Our members will be extremely excited about the opportunity to travel, stay and compete in these three geographical areas of our amazing province. We will make an immense and positive impact on your communities as we transform the image and attitudes towards the 55+ population among residents of all ages in British Columbia.”
The 55+ BC Games in Kelowna will take place Sept. 10 to 14.
