Reports Indicate Travel Industry Unhappy With New Cancun Eco Tax

[ad_1]

Hoteliers and tour operators are not happy with a new eco-tax imposed last December 20, 2018, and taking effect on January 1, 2019.

The 25 peso tax is just over $1 and will be collected at the time of payment for hotel rooms at check-in or check-out, depending on when the hotel bill is settled.

Hoteliers say that the new tax comes as a surprise and they have expressed their concerns regarding the tax to Reportur.

Tour operators noted that taxes such as this one have failed in recent years in destinations such as Mallorca, Spain, and that low tourism arrivals could fall even lower if visitors are saddled with yet another fee.

The Finance Law 2019 of the Municipality of Benito Juarez was passed by Congress and enforces the per-night fee that all users of hotels, inns, boarding houses, hostels and motels will need to pay.
