Ski Hills Best of the Best

Interior ski hills are getting their due from USA Today.

The publication is in the midst of a reader’s poll looking for the ’10 Best’ in five categories pertaining to ski hills.

The categories include:

  • Best ski resort
  • Best cross-country ski resort
  • Best ski town
  • Best Apres-ski bar
  • Best terrain park

Silver Star in Vernon, Big White in Kelowna and Revelstoke Mountain are mentioned prominently.

Revelstoke Mountain Resort is currently number two in voting for best ski resort.

“With North America’s greatest vertical — 5,620 feet — Revelstoke Mountain Resort offers 3,121 skiable acres, in addition to cat skiing and heli skiing, making it one of Canada’s best. Combine that with the area’s big powder dumps, and you have a giant playground worthy of any powder hound’s bucket list. With 93 percent of the terrain rated for intermediate and advanced skiers and riders, this is certainly a resort for adrenaline junkies.”

Silver Star is second in voting as best cross-country ski resort.

“SilverStar Mountain Resort is home to Canada’s largest network of daily groomed Nordic trails. Dual mountain ski passes allow visitors to enjoy the 34 miles (55 kilometres) of trails at SilverStar in addition to 31 miles (50 kilometres) of trails at neighbouring Sovereign Lake Nordic Centre.”

Big White is third for best terrain park.

“The top-notch Telus Terrain Park at Big White Ski Resort attracts freestylers with its obstacles, boarder cross course, half pipe and superpipe spread across 50 acres of private, lift-accessed terrain.”

Only ski resorts in North America are being rated.

The City of Nelson is 19th in voting for best ski town.

Not surprising, Whistler/Blackcomb finds itself in the running in four of the five categories.

It is up for best ski resort, best ski town and best terrain park. Garibaldi Lift Co. is up for best apres-ski bar.

A panel of skiers and snowboarders, including some former Olympians, selected the top 20 in each category and readers voted for the top 10.

Voting is open until Monday, Feb. 8 at 9 a.m. local time.
