Motorists will have a new place to rest on the Okanagan Connector, Transportation Minister Todd Stone announced Monday.
The rest area will be built between Merritt and Kelowna, at the Loon Lake interchange.
“We recognize that rest areas are extremely important for truck drivers and the general public who are on the road for long hours, as they need a safe, clean place to stop and have a rest,” said Stone.
The announcement is part of $9 million to upgrade existing rest areas and build new ones across the province.
Access improvements will be made to the Loon Lake interchange, including construction of a new access road to the rest area.
It will have running water, flush toilets and separate parking areas for passenger vehicles and commercial trucks.
The rest area has also been designed to support future car charging stations and WiFi.
Construction at Loon Lake is expected to begin the spring, with completion in late fall.
The ministry also plans to issue a Request for Information to explore private-sector interest in supplying commercial services at rest areas.
