Canadian hospitality saved one man’s disastrous holiday

ST. JOHN’S — Canadians are really nice, we already know this. But one Aussie recently found that our niceness went beyond his wildest expectations.

According to TravelTalk, Shayne O’Brien of Greenthorpe, New South Wales in Australia arrived in St. John’s, Newfoundland for a fabulous two-week, self-drive holiday. But his trip quickly took a turn for the worse after he was unable to retrieve his rental car, which he prepaid through his travel agent prior to arrival.

Turns out O’Brien didn’t bring with him a credit card, which is often required with rental companies. O’Brien did everything he could to find a solution, including running a credit check and asking his wife (who did not accompany him on the trip) to send photos of his credit card. Nothing worked.

Enter his sister, who had the genius idea of posting his plight to a St. John’s buy-and-sell page on Facebook. Soon after, offers from locals came pouring in, proving that no one beats Canadians when it comes to niceness and hospitality.

O’Brien received offers to go on local tours and even to meet up for brunch. One local went so far as to drive him to Ferryland to see the now-famous shored iceberg, while local tour operator Iceberg Quest took him on a boat cruise to see whales and icebergs and also lent him a vehicle for personal use.

What started off as the trip from hell quickly turned into what O’Brien now calls “the best holiday EVER!” Way to go, Canada!

Well it looks like my dreams of seeing icebergs are going to happen. A gentleman has offered to take me to Ferryland on…
