Foreign Office warns UK travellers on Portugal forest fires

British travellers have been warned over the impact of forest fires in Portugal by the Foreign & Commonwealth Office.

Fires have been raging in southern Portugal for three days after the country recorded one of its highest ever temperatures.

More than 1,000 firefighters with 300 vehicles and seven aircraft are battling the fires.

Fires are located around Monchique, in the Algarve.

Portuguese authorities are evacuating affected areas of the town and surrounding areas.

“If you are in this area, follow the instructions of the Portuguese police and Civil Protection authorities,” urged the FCO.

“For your own safety, travel to the Monchique area is not advised under any circumstances until cleared by the Portuguese authorities.”

Civil Protection Portugal can be reached on 800 246 246 or at www.prociv.pt.

Monchique is 155 miles south of Lisbon.

Nearby villages, including Portela do Vento and Odemira, have been evacuated.
