The National Congress of Argentina has approved the creation of the Iberá National Park.
Located in the province of Corrientes, in the north-east of the country, it has a surface of 159,800 hectares and will become one of the attractions of the Litoral Eco-touristic Corridor.
This new protected space (located within the area of Iberá, which is the second largest wetland worldwide) was donated by the Conservation Land Trust and Flora y Fauna Argentina foundations, and adds to the 553,000 hectares of marshes and wetlands of the adjoining Iberá Provincial Park.
Douglas Tompkins and his wife, Kristine McDivitt, both founders of CLT, drove the donation initiative.
This new park, together with the Provincial Park, make up an area of four thousand species of flora and fauna – almost 30 per cent of the species acknowledged in Argentina.
