Playa del Carmen Reports Visitor Increase

Despite several negative news stories to start 2018, Playa del Carmen reported an increase in visitors and hotel capacity during Holy Week.

According to the Riviera Maya Times, the General Directorate of Tourism in Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo, revealed the region saw an 18.19 percent in foreign tourist arrivals and hotel capacity reached 91.46 percent.

The increase in numbers helped Playa del Carmen reach second on the list of the 10 most wanted tourist destinations in Mexico for vacation. The report also suggests 44 percent of travelers visit on vacation, 39 percent on business and 17 percent arrive only for the weekend.

In terms of Mexican tourists who visit Playa del Carmen, 49 percent travel for business, 45 percent for the weekend and only eight percent for vacations. In addition, 42 percent of visitors staying at local hotels are from the United States, 17 percent from Argentina, nine percent from Canada and eight percent from Brazil.

Playa del Carmen’s tourism bureau said the number of visitors from England, Germany and Spain are increasing. The region was also listed as the 15th-most popular destination in the world in the TripAdvisor’s Travelers Choice Awards 2018.

Some of the other cities on the top 10 tourist destinations in Mexico list include Cancun, Puerto Vallarta, Acapulco, Mexico City, Cabo San Lucas and more.
