TORONTO – Walking is supposed to help improve your fitness, not land you in hospital. But for 10 cities in the U.S., taking a leisurely stroll down the street could actually get you killed.
Advocacy group Smart Growth America has released its annual list of America’s most dangerous-to-pedestrian metro areas, based on the likelihood of getting hit by a car while on a walk. This year, Florida has secured eight of the 10 top spots, presumably due to a rapidly growing population and increased traffic congestion.
Here are the top 10 most dangerous-to-pedestrian cities in the U.S.:
1. Cape Coral-Fort Myers, Florida
2. Palm Bay-Melbourne-Titusville, Florida
3. Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford, Florida
4. Jacksonville, Florida
5. Deltona-Daytona Beach-Ormond Beach, Florida
6. Lakeland-Winter Haven, Florida
7. Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater, Florida
8. Jackson, Mississippi
9. Memphis, Tennessee-Mississippi-Arkansas
10. North Port-Sarasota-Bradenton, Florida
Alternatively, which cities are pedestrians safest against vehicles? Smart Growth also ranked the 104 largest metro areas in the U.S. and found the following as the top 10 destinations where you’re least likely to be hit by a car:
